Alan Russell, son of Cyril Russell and grandson of Charles Russell, Baron Russell of Killowen, was a director of Helbert, Wagg & Co. from 1946-1962, where his father had previously been a partner. He went on to become an executive director of Schroders Ltd from 1963-1970. At Helbert, Wagg & Co he was responsible for the creation, in 1946, of the City's first corporate finance department, professionally run with a chartered accountant at its head. This brought the firm to the forefront of corporate finance activity in Britain. He also initiated the firm's move into pension fund management, where it set up the first UK group life pension scheme. Russell had been inspired by what was happening in the US, whereby most companies had pension schemes for their employees, and foresaw that British companies would follow suit.
